Employee Engagement

November 10, 2010

Today I sent out a question on how companies foster engagement with their employees. I have had great answers. The answers given, for most of us, would be common sense, but unfortunately, we sometimes forget how important the small things mean to another human being, like saying thank you, or I appreciate your hard work. Better yet, telling someone what a great idea they had and giving them the support they need especially during times like these where your employees’ responsibilities are expanding because their colleagues have been downsized. Remember that your employees are fearful they are next, and they are stressed because of it. For example, recently, a client of mine dismissed an employee’s concern about adding responsibility when her colleague was let go, and the stress that was added overwhelmed her. First of all, it is important to remember that when employees are stressed, their work performance declines. Keep in mind that they are stressed because they worry that they cannot get their work, and now additional work, completed in a timely manner. And… don’t dismiss the employee when they come to tell talk to you.  Remember this is change….. Change is not always bad, but not always good either. But realize that change effects everyone differently. Although most people are survival mode, staying engaged with employees, when done authentically, will maintain and lead to better productivity, less burn out and a healthy environment.
